ARTIST SPOTLIGHT:
MARIA DAWBARN-WRIGHT
is the owner extraordinaire of Northernline Arts on 8 Jockey Lane in Knaresborough, just up the hill from the train station.
She studied at Harrogate College, before enrolling at Duncan of Jordanstone University in Dundee where she developed her talent as a skilled potter. Below is a fun-filled artist profile to get insight into the story behind the successful business.
What fuels your creativity? “A good glaze combination, my students’ achievements, all things miniature, and of course hairy-arsed potters with big beards!”
Fun facts about yourself? “I have three kilns named Frida, Pablo and Shera; my favourite things to make are cortado cups and cuddle cups; being on the potter’s wheel clears my head and makes my head feel free of everyday nonsense and I have an amazing group of creative regulars who regularly inspire me and remind me how brilliantly rewarding my job is!”
Any shoutouts for your staff? “Yes of course they’re amazing! My work wouldn’t be possible without Douglas Thompson, Natasha Gillyard and of course my daughter Alex Dawbarn!”
What does your business offer? “We offer practical creative ceramic experiences, including hand-sculpting and using the potter's wheel. We cater to a comprehensive age range and place a great emphasis on inclusion and accessibility, allowing us to offer sessions that suit budding artists of all abilities and learning styles. Our shop offers a huge selection of uniquely handmade ceramics that are perfect for gifting or kitting yourself out with flair!”
